July 4, 2010 we planned a baseball trip to see the Pittsburgh Pirates. Of course my mother had to find a couple of things to do while we were in Pittsburgh. Mom worked with someone that had grown up in Pittsburg so she sent me daily updates of places to see and restaurants to visit while we were there. Number one on the list was eating at Primanti Brothers. They were famous for a sandwich, piled high with meat and loaded with french fries on
the bun. We ended up sitting at the counter and enjoyed our sandwiches together. I believe our server could tell we were tourists as it took us awhile to decide what we wanted, but the sandwich was awesome. I ate every single bit of it! I think mom may have had some leftovers.
The other must do on the list was to ride up the Duquesne Incline. Mom’s friend had recommended this as a must. It was a chance to see great views of the Three Rivers. At the top, they pointed out Heinz Field and PNC Park. Of course Pops and I were a bit skeptical of the incline, but we went along with it. The incline was crowded that day. Once we got to the front, we purchased our ticket and hopped on the incline. The brochure mentioned that the Duquesne Incline had the most spectacular panoramic view of Pittsburgh. The views did not disappoint. I have
attached a few pictures of the views we had once we made it to the top.

A picture of the Incline. We were already at the top!
What a view!
A view of Heinz Field. You can see the BMX ramp also near the water.
We saw two games while in Pittsburgh. The first was Saturday night after our Primanti Brothers experience. This game was dominated by the Phillies. The final score was 12-4. It was still exciting to be at PNC Park and enjoy a baseball game. Following the game, they had scheduled fireworks. Leaving the stadium we boarded a boat. We were one of the first ones on so we headed straight to the top deck to find a seat. It felt as though we were right on top of the fireworks. We could see where they were being fired from and our boat deck had the perfect view.
Our seats for the Saturday night game.
The following day, the Pirates and Phillies had an afternoon start. Prior to the game, a few BMX Riders were right outside the park. They were putting on a demonstration right along the river. It is amazing how daring and fearless some people are. The louder the crowd…. the more flips. It was a great way to start our afternoon of baseball.
The weather was perfect and the Pirates were struggling. They needed a win. Pittsburgh got off to a strong start scoring two runs in the first innings, but the Phillies took control of the game and led 5-2 going into the seventh inning stretch. No matter where I go, I always like to root for the home team, so I wanted to see the Pirates fight back. In the bottom of the 7th, the Pirates exploded for six runs. They put together some timely hits starting with a solo home run to lead off the inning. After a few doubles and two out singles, they took an 8-5 lead going into the 8th. The set-up man and closer came for the last two innings and shut the strong Phillies hitters down, included Ryan Howard, the Phillies first base slugger.
Overall, I didn’t get to see some of the big named pitchers from either team, but I had another great Fourth of July baseball trip with my parents. One that I will cherish forever!
